#1485² SORRY, BUT NOT SORRY – S4 E8 – IS MODIFYING IKEA CABINETS LEGAL?

When my sister came up with this idea I wasn’t sure what to say. Of course it wasn’t her idea, she has seen it somewhere online, probably on instagram, but it was just nuts. Why would you buy a new cabinet from IKEA and cut it in half, remodel it and build something new out of it? Honestly, is this even legal? This must probably violate the Geneva Convention. 9 out of 10 marriages are getting divorced after such a project. I am pretty sure that this new “trend” has caused more troubles and arguments than good looking furnitures.

But let’s start at the beginning. My sister has a master degree in architecture, I have a master degree in mechanical engineering and my dad has the actual practical experience of millions of years leading a manufacturing department in the industry. What can possibly go wrong? And it all went wrong? No, not all, but it was a mess. IKEA furniture is practical, cheap and designed for their specific use case. They don’t use a lot of wood and try to save costs wherever they can. Honestly, I would do the same. So the base material isn’t the best for remodeling everything. Well, my sister, or the insta post didn’t care about that. And right they are, with the right ideas, most of the time very unconventional solutions everything seems to be possible. And so the result is ok. I just don’t get the point. We have spend so much time and brain capacity to rethink something people have build thousand of times before us. People that do not do anything else all day long I should add.

What do you think? Is this a good idea? Or should we all follow the trend?

See you next time!
