Driving in a car, or more specifically explained, the different parts of the car has a long tradition. That moving parts need to “run in”, is a well known fact. And indeed, it makes sense to run in parts. Especially for its longevity. The only fact people are starting to have different opinions about is how and for how long. Not owning a car, like a leasing car, makes things like this pretty easy. Who cares about what will happen to the car after I am done with it in two or three years. Exactly! But this mindset changes once it’s your own car that is on the line. Of course you are a bit more careful here! And it makes sense in the long run.
My RS3 is now officially driven in. Or let’s rather say, it’s driven in for more than 2000 km’s and gets the first oil change soon. A thing no-one really does these days. Oil changes are every two years, or at least the OEM’s say that. Well, they can say what they want. Changing your oil every years makes just sense when you drive a performance car. You should look at the oil in your car like you look at your tires or brakes. They wear over time. In order to do what it is supposed to do, oil is loosing its performance over time. That’s why I will change the oil right now, and not in two years from now. Until the car tells me to change the oil, I will have changed it twice already. That’s what you get, when the service costs and the convenience of the customer is more important than the actual car.
Starting from now, the car will see higher RPM’s more frequently, but of course only when it’s heated up completely. Which brings us to the next topic that is as important as the driving in part. An engine works best at a certain temperature. Below or above that, it’s not optimal to use it there. Especially not, if you want to keep the engine or gearbox for a while. That’s why we need to heat up the car. Not demanding too much power before it’s heated up is sometimes hard! Agreed! Especially when it takes so long for the car. But again, it’s what you should do! It’s what you should like to do. Sometimes you will see a fast car driving slow. Maybe that’s why. They are waiting for the car to heat up.
See you next time.
