#423 Passion, Motivation & Mindset – S2 E12 – Being one step ahead of yourself

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST ENEMY?

Your boss that obviously hates you for no reason? The new partner of your ex? The neighbor nobody really likes? Or the guy that wants your dream job in the office as well?

Just take a couple of seconds and figure out who your greatest enemy might be. Someone from your family? Someone from the neighborhood? Or maybe even someone else?

WELL, SURPRISE, SURPRISE! BUT YOUR BIGGEST ENEMY IS YOU!

Believe it or not, but the impact you have on your own life is by far stronger than the influence others can or might have on your life. Sure, family and friends can try their best and really increase the pressure, but in the end, you will always be a little bit closer to what is really going on in your life. You will know exactly how you feel and what you think. You will know exactly what you need to do in order to change your opinion or do this instead of that.

Procrastinating, being lazy, laying in bed all day long, not really following your goals in life and just living into the day. Sure, sometimes we simply need this in order to recover, but come on, we do this far more often than necessary!

WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN ONCE THE ENEMY IS INSIDE OUR OWN WALLS CAN BE SEEN IN THE HISTORY BOOKS ALREADY.

They will burn everything down. Attack one strategic facility after the other until, well, until we are conquered and giving up. You might have a lot of enemies out there in the field, you might have not, but the biggest enemy is already inside the walls. Preventing you from reaching your goals, suggesting different approaches, allowing procrastination to settle down.

BEING ONE STEP AHEAD OF YOURSELF

We have already heard about the “being one step ahead of all the others”, right? But if we are honest, Hollywood is teaching us that even that isn’t enough! In a good movie, the main character might be always at least three steps ahead of all the others. Already knowing how the other person will react to the reaction that will happen because of the next move. Too complicated? At least it sounds like that!

BUT IS IT REALLY ENOUGH TO BE JUST ONE STEP AHEAD OF YOURSELF? OR DO WE EVEN NEED MORE THAN ONE SINGLE STEP?

A question I was wondering about for quite some time. On the one side, sure, we are not simple minded. We are the greatest species god is claimed to have ever produced! Our brains are very complex machines and we are far away from understanding everything that is going on in our heads. But on the other side we are just animals sometimes. Instinct driven! For example when the idiots around can’t drive, or you see the brand new PORSCHE 911 992 Turbo S and urgently want one no matter what. In situations like this, I guess we are still acting like primates did 10000 years ago. Leaving our cave early on in the morning in order to hunt.

But to make this thing a little bit shorter, I came to the conclusion that being one step ahead might already have such a huge impact on our own lives, that we should start with this and see if we need to dive deeper down later on in life once our biggest enemy figured out a way how to trick ourselves with the being one step ahead approach.

HOW TO BE BE ONE STEP AHEAD OF YOURSELF?

As mentioned already, you are your biggest enemy. You prevent yourself from reaching your goals, from doing more, from being who you want to be. You simply sit there and claim to have no time for this, or no energy left for that, or explaining yourself why this behavior might be better for you instead of doing something more productive. And sure, sometimes this can really have a calming effect on ourselves. We find excuses why we can’t, why today isn’t the best day for doing it, why we are still lacking the resources to finally get going in life with our own projects.

But if you are really honest with yourself, this process is following the same pattern all the time. You are always playing the same cards, the same excuses, the same unique problems only you might experience in life. Sure, your situation in life is miserable, but so are the situations of other people around you as well. You can’t just let this thing stand in your way forever, can you? I mean sure, technically you can, but I wouldn’t recommend it!

What you need is the understanding for what you are doing. The moment you talk yourself out of working on your projects for university and instead watch a YouTube video you should analyze your behavior! What are your arguments? Which is the most effective approach towards starting to procrastinate? Well, and after figuring this out, you can start to implement a new strategy that will be at least one step ahead of your own enemy inside.

Sounds like the typical “easy to learn, hard to master” thing! Sure, in theory this might be so easy, but in reality, this is hard to implement! I know! But there is one thing that should motivate you at this point.

ONCE YOU DEFEAT YOUR ENEMY INSIDE, IT WILL GET EASIER AND EASIER TO DEFEAT HIM AGAIN AND AGAIN! UNTIL, WELL, UNTIL HE WILL NOT ATTACK YOU THAT FREQUENTLY AND LEAVES YOU ALONE DOING YOUR PROJECTS MOST OF THE TIME!

Be clever? NO! Be brilliant! You know yourself the best! Think about how you will react and change this reaction because of your action! Change your attitude towards life! Do things differently!

SURPRISE YOURSELF AND YOU WILL BE SURPRISED WHAT IS POSSIBLE!

One step ahead of yourself, come on! You can do that!

See you next time!
