Motivation. Just a word, or is there more?
Of course you already know what this word means.
- what drives you!
- what gets you up in the morning!
- what keeps you doing something!
- what gives you energy!
- what lets you follow your dreams!
- whats demands you to get off the couch!
But motivation can be also:
- what you have a lack of!
- what you really miss in your life!
- what you lose very quickly!
- what others have, but you do not have!
No matter where you are in life and what you are doing, motivation is something you need every single day!
Therefore, we will start to talk about this today!
How to get motivation?
If you could buy motivation, would you do it?
“Hello Sir, I would like to have some motivation please!”
“How much do you want? We are currently having three special offers. Motivation for one day, one week or one year. If you pay upfront, you can get up to 40 % off!”
“Sounds good, I will take a week!”
I guess, if this would be possible, someone could earn a bunch of money with it! Or is it actually possible?
Have you ever experienced the feeling of being motivated after buying something? I bet you have! Everyone has experienced this. That new bike you wanted so much that helps you to climb this mountain without any effort, the new running shoes that are making you 50 % faster, or the new computer you bought for starting your book.
We can actually get some motivation out of buying stuff, but most of the time, this motivation acts more like a boost function. It works for some days, maybe even some weeks, but after this, it all goes “pufff”!
“So, what other ways are there to get motivation?”
Motivation can be “created” through the use of many different techniques. Today, we will talk about the general classification of motivation.
Generally speaking you can separate the sources for motivation into two categories. The motivation that comes from within (intrinsic) and the one that comes from the outside (extrinsic).
Motivation from within (intrinsic)
This is the kind of motivation that comes from within yourself. You want to be a singer? This is what makes you practice it. You like playing soccer, this is what gets you to the soccer field. I like racing, this is what makes me work at my driving skills.
We do things because we like them, or at least that is how it is supposed to be. Your intrinsic motivation can be very easily influenced by yourself. You do not need other people around you. There is no need to be at a certain place at a certain time. This is just you! It is more like a mental game, than anything else.
Sometimes, we just need to be reminded that this is really what we want!
If you want to improve on this, there are certain things you can do. Here is one examples.
Create a vision board
Why don’t you create a vision board and put all your goals on it? That way, you can just look at it from time to time and get reminded how much you really want this.
I personally have this vision board as the background picture on all my electrical devices, therefore, every time I look at my phone or check out something on my computer, I have a short glimpse at my goals. Of course I have a closer look on them from time to time, like directly before going to sleep or as the first thing to do in the morning, but that is it. That is all it takes to get “a little bit” of motivation that helps you through the day.
Motivation from outside (extrinsic)
Have you ever tried to do 100 push-ups alone in your room? I guess it felt kind of hart! Next time you don’t do this at home!
“Don’t try this at home!”
But instead, do it in a gym. At home, maybe your cat is watching, but that’s it! At the gym, you have all those people around you! Maybe, even that nice girl you like so much? Is she looking? “I guess so! Therefore, you better do those 100 push-ups!”
The same task, the same day, but two completely different levels of motivation. In your room, you feel like “mhhhh, maybe I just stop!? I do not feel well today!” At the gym, this is not possible! “I can not give up! Everyone is watching! She is watching! Come on! You can do this!”
This was just one example, but you already knew this one! No matter what you want to do in life, there are a lot of different ways to get motivation from the outside.
Maybe you are motivated by earning money, get respect and recognition, make yourself a name in this world, want to impress others, or simply want to get rid of your feeling of guilt?
No matter what works best for you, if you know what drives you, you can use it to your advantage. Why don’t you just use the group dynamic of a spinning course, or do your stretching in the park where everybody can see you? Or why are you not writing a blog and post something every day? All of this will motivate you!
If you want to be able to work at something continuously and do not lose your motivation after a while, you need to know how to motivate yourself! In this series, we will talk about this in detail!
This post is supposed to be an introduction that leads to this topic. In the future, we will tackle the different topics individually!
See you next time!
