#381 Entrepreneurship & Business – S2 E7 – What makes a good idea, a great idea?

You have this one particular idea in mind? This thing the world has waited for so long? But what makes you think that this idea is in fact the idea of a lifetime?

When it comes to having ideas, some are more creative than the others. At least they would describe it that way. But is that even important? I don’t think that having ideas has anything to do with being creative. Sure, it helps a lot to figure out new things that have not been invented yet. But even without any creativity inside your brain, you can still experience the every day life problems, people struggle with.

Your idea needs to solve a problem.

Have you ever wondered what differentiates a good product from a great product? Is it the price? The quality? The improvement of your life with this new thing?

In the end, it comes all down to personal opinions. While for some a Porsche 911 might be the best car in the world, others would laugh about this statement. Not because they have no clue about cars, but because they simply like something else.

In the beginning cars were invented to solve the problem of individual transportation. Sure, a horse-drawn-carriage was a good thing to have in the late 18th century, but simply not very practical.

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.

Henry Ford

But luckily they did not ask. They built cars, many many cars. In fact, the horse carriages soon vanished from city streets all over the world.

Early cars where more or less horse carriages without the horses, right? They did the same, but longer, faster and a bit more comfortable for the people who had the money to own them. But at the beginning, new products are always expensive. Therefore, cars where just a thing for the rich. A toy, something to fool around with. Only later, cars got available to the masses.

What makes you think that your idea is good? Does it really make life easier? Does it really help people to move on in life? Is there any benefit for your costumers?

Without testing this idea with customers, sure, you will never know. Maybe it’s working, maybe it’s not. But what you can do before taking this step is getting to work and make things perfect in your head. What would be the ultimate product version? The grand finale?

If you want to know what time it is, you do what? Look at your watch, or at your phone? People are wearing watches these days, not for the sake of knowing the time, but for the image, the prestige, the feeling, the emotional connection. Therefore, a watch needs to be much more than just a piece of machinery that can tell the time.

But it doesn’t stop there, right? A phone is no longer a thing to have a telephone conversation with, cloths, cars, furniture. The impracticality of things is just not accepted anymore. We want more! Faster, higher, further!

What makes a good idea a great idea?

It’s the thinking outside the box. It’s the delivering more. It’s the quality. It’s the price. It’s the reputation. It’s the customer experience. It’s so much more than just the thing you are selling.

People don’t want quarter-inch drill bits. They want quarter-inch holes.

Theodore Levitt

But it is so true. In fact, they do not even want to have the holes, they want to hang something on the wall, or screw something together in order to create something new. Therefore, customers are not looking for products, they are looking for the solution of their problems.

Whatever kind of idea you have in mind, ask yourself, what is this thing useful for? Why do people need it and what other ways are there to solve this one particular problem?

If nobody will copy your idea, it wasn’t particularly good.

Are you afraid that someone else will copy your idea? In fact, this is a great sign that you are on the right path.

Doing a daily blog? Not many people copy this idea, but writing a book once and cash out as much money as possible? A lot of people have tried to copy that concept already. Therefore, I either stop doing this daily blog, or change the concept as long as necessary, until others will copy my concept as well.

And it works all the time! A good idea becomes a great idea automatically the moment you continue your efforts and invest more time and money in it. Why? Because either you stop working on it, or improve it until it is ready for the market.

Keep up the spirit and work on your ideas! It will be worth the effort!

See you next time!
