#404 Reaching goals – *Topic week 10* – Day 3 – The mistakes people make

Learning from other peoples mistakes? This sounds like a great idea! Let’s do it!

  1. Setting goals too low or too high

If you want to sell your old car and kick of the negotiation with 5000€ as the starting price, how likely is it that someone will give you more than that? If you aim too low, sure, you might reach your goals sooner, possibly even easier, but you will not really be satisfied with the outcome, will you? On the other side, you can also ask for a million but might not find a buyer. Aiming too high? Well, that can be a mistake as well.

So what should you do? Starting with either aiming too high, or too low until you figured it out, or definitely start with either one of them. Rather aiming too high than too low or the other way around? God, sounds complicated.

I guess, the right level must be somewhere in between these two extremes. But we can not just randomly guess into the blind, can we? In the end, I guess it’s not my job to decide. I mean, if I were you, I would rather be me, therefore, do whatever you think is the right thing to do. But if you would still want me to say something about it, I would suggest you to aim so high, that you actually start to worry about telling this to other people. I guess this is the best start for now, you can adapt the goal later on if necessary.

Looking at the world in a more rational way, sure, we shouldn’t let other peoples opinion have an effect on us and our behavior, but that is easier said than done, isn’t it? If you want to become an astronaut, well, reach for the stars and go and become one! You will not be satisfied with pretending to be an astronaut, running around in an astronaut custom in the universal studios from 9 to 5 and entertaining visitors.

2. Forgetting all about your goals

“I always had the dream to get a Porsche, but well, I didn’t get one”. A statement, I heard someone saying recently with the age of 60. That person? Well, he could easily walk right into the next store and get one, but that is not the point. The point is, that this person forgot all about his goals over time. Sure, it seems like this goal was not that important after all. Otherwise, he would most likely get one, at least now. But the thing is of course, that you can’t allow this forgetting process to happen. You need to constantly remind yourself about the things you want to accomplish. Just in case you forgot, this is the thing you wanted to reach, this is the thing you dedicated your life to! Oh really?

Well, I guess most of the people out there are missing this thing in the equation. Sure, it would be great to have this in the future. But well, I have other things to do, right? I can do this later, tomorrow, or even next week! Sure, I will do it next week!

WHAT?! This is not getting you anywhere, don’t you see that? You need to stop this nonsense and repeat your goals! How often? Well, as often as necessary. Some people need to do this every single hour, day, week, or whatever. The point is not in following an advice someone else is giving you, but instead to do the thing that you actually need! You know yourself the best, therefore, you know exactly how often you need to repeat it until it will become a part of you.

3. Procrastinating

Procra… Procrasti… what? Never heard about that one! But I heard someone saying that this thing might be evil! It is claimed to destroy dreams, hopes and careers. You better not learn the real meaning of it, in case you don’t know it yet. For all the others, good luck! Just kidding of course. This is a mindset thing. If someone claims something else, I can hardly believe that! Sure, you tend to procrasti… something, but you are the one that is doing this on purpose! You decide to do it, not the other way around. You allow this thing to be in your life.

4. Do not make this thing become a part of you

Sure, you can set your goals once and forget all about them until you die, but that is not really the point in life, is it? What you need to do is to set the kind of goals that you really want to reach! You need to stand behind this idea! You need to be convinced that you will reach them, no matter what! And then, well, this thing becomes a part of you. A part of your identity. This is what we need! You need to become the goal.

People will know about your goals, not because you tell them, but because they will see what you are doing all day long!

5. Setting no goals

Well, setting no goals might be a mistake as well, don’t you think? How many people do you know that can tell you their particular goals in life right on the spot? Too many people walk clueless through life. They have no goals in sight, sure, they want to get going somehow or another. Found a family and general stuff like this, but they do not really have a clue about what they want. They are just living into the day, doing things, sure, but do not really focus there energy on something in particular. They just live. But where is this leading us towards? I don’t know, you tell me!

6. Setting the wrong goals

You want to exploit others? You want to harm others in order to make some money, well, goals like this might earn you a fortune really quickly, but do not really help your karma points in life, right? Setting goals that are ethically not correct, not the thing I would recommend.

7. Not believing in yourself

During the last week, I was doubting my book idea at least once a day. But how is that even possible? Shouldn’t I be more confident when it comes to this topic. Sure, I should be, but it doesn’t seem to be so easy to actually implement this into my life. I mean, this has a positive side as well. I question my doing, I wonder about what other people might think about all of this. What they would miss. What they would demand from this book. But sure, I need to get over this! I know that I can write this book! I know that it gets a little bit better day by day! I believe in myself, therefore, reaching my goals becomes just a matter of time. And look where I already stand! I ticked the first boxes after 3 years already.

8. The biggest mistake is to do nothing

I can talk for hours, telling you what you should or shouldn’t do. But in the end, this is not important! This is just me talking. But that is not changing anything. If you do not start to change your life, well, it will not change itself! You need to be the one that is finally starting to do something! If you don’t get this, well, I guess the last three hours writing this was just a waste of time!

You can do it if you believe you can.
