In today’s episode, we will talk about “lift and coast“.
“Lift and coast, what does that even mean?”
Lift and coast is a fuel saving strategy. Instead of holding on to the accelerater as long as possible until you are reaching your braking point, you lift off the accelerater before you reach your braking zone and let the car roll after reaching the top speed until you finally arrive at your breaking point which will be a little bit further down the road when doing it correctly.
Ok, and in short?
Just lift off the accelerator pedal 150 – 200 meters before your breaking point and this is it.
Why are racing teams use this strategy?
Because they want to save fuel. Obviously, you do not save tons of fuel with that method, but you can save here a little and there another tiny bit, which will in the end make the difference. Of course, this strategy has a negative impact on the lap times, therefore, the teams actually lose time!
But why are they doing this? Cannot they just get more fuel? Or do another pit stop?
Of course, they could, but a pitstop takes a lot of time. Considering the pit entry, the speed limit in the pitlane, the time for fueling, maybe a minimum stopping time that would make them stand there helpless while all the competitors are passing by and then of course the pit speed again after all those seconds, which in some cases will directly link to a fancy pit exit that cost you even more time. Adding all that time together, you can see that the lift and coast strategy can be much better sometimes, but of course it depends on the situation, as always.
But why are you telling us this stuff?
Because I want to teach you a little bit about racing and life.
Imagine, you are that race car. Your task: Running around in circles all day long. Do you make a break? NO! Why? Because a race car does not stop! A race car is at its limit every single round! Maxing out to its full potential! And then, what happens? The car needs to stop for fuel and tires. So, what are you doing? You get some rest. Get some sleep, get some fuel for your body. And in the second you leave the pit, you are back at the full gas! You are giving everything you have! Every single round!
Now comes the tricky part.
The race goes on and on. Minute by minute, in an endurance race like your life, even hour by hour. But you just keep on going!
So, we can conclude this goes really well for you! But then, you reach a critical point in your race. The end of the race comes in sight. This could be a goal you are working for. A dream you want to reach! And what are you doing? You try to even increase your performance! You go even closer to the edge! And is it working? Hell yeah! It is!
But what you are not really considering in this enthusiastic moment is the fact, that this consumes more energy as normal. And soon you reach the point, where you have overdone it! Either on track by crashing into the barriers because you lost your focus, or off track by consuming all your energy you have. Either way, you need to go back to the pits. And what does that mean? This means, you are loosing a ton of time! You were that close! But now! It is gone! You lost it! Your chances? There are no chances anymore! This is it! Get your stuff! We are driving home!
Therefore, I highly recommend you to implement a “lift and coast” strategy into your personal life! And use it in certain situations, where you feel like you are way too close to the edge. Because as we have seen above! Losing a little bit of time, but reaching your goals is fare better, then getting to a complete hold. Because this can mean a total break down, the start of a depression or even worse things!
I personally do this quite often, because you are still doing a lot, but you stay on track!
