Do you have a clear picture in your head about your future in motorsport? Where do you want to go? Which level do you want to reach?
In motorsport it is the same as in any other field of life. You can strive for the top, the midfield or the end. You can do something for a living, or just for fun.
As I have already mentioned in the introduction of this series last time, we will primarily focus on the non professional side of motorsport.
Non professional side of motorsport = you are not getting paid for driving
Can you tell me where you want to participate in? Just some trackdays on the weekends, or the 24H of LE MANS? Do you want to race internationally, or just in your country? Do you want to race in sprint series, or in endurance racing? The list of options might be long.
But if you do not now what you really want, what makes you think that you will get there?
Everything is just a process.
STEP 1: WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO?
Define your end goal. Where do you want to participate in? What will be the highest level you want to reach?
STEP 2: WHERE ARE YOU STANDING RIGHT NOW?
What is your current level? Are you a total beginner, or already quite experienced? Do you already have a race car, or just dreaming about one? Do you know how to drive properly, or do you need to learn it first?
STEP 3: CREATE A ROAD MAP
Now that you know where you want to go and where you are standing right now, why don’t you create a road map that will lead you there, step by step, day by day.
Racing is more than just sitting in the car and having some fun. The sooner you will understand that, the better! You will need money, a lot of money. You will need a team, a large team. You will need time, a lot of time. You will need motivation, a lot of motivation.
You think you can’t plan the next 10 years a head of time? Sure, you can’t predict the future, but at least the next three steps should be possible for you to plan.
STEP 4: DEFINE WHAT YOU WANT
MOTORSPORT is expensive, time consuming and dangerous.
If you really want to get going in this sport, well, you need to know exactly what you want.
This journey can become the best thing in the world, or the worlds worst nightmare!
In order to prevent the nightmare thing from occurring, there is a lot of work in front of us. But we will get there! Believe me!
STEP 5: WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY IN ORDER TO MOVE ON?
Every single day matters. Every single hour matters. You can’t prepare yourself too much. Racing is war. Racing is exhausting! Racing is stressful.
You think you can’t do something today that is helping you to get going? You are wrong!
You can work on the theoretical side of racing, you can practice on a simulator, you can do sport, you can work on your reaction times, you can try to rule over your mind.
The list of activities is long!
Every single day is another chance for you to move on! Every single day is another chance to take the next step.
Why don’t you start your racing career today?
STEP BY STEP! DAY BY DAY!
Because everything is just a process. No goal can be too high, no dream too big. But of course, it will make a huge difference if you are looking for a little bit of fun at the weekends, or an international seat in an LMP 2 car.
Getting started in motorsport will take time!
If you think you have already a clue about racing, let me tell you one thing, you have not! Five years ago I thought I am a good driver, today I know that I was not. In five years I will look back at my skills I have today and will laugh again. If you are not already doing this for 20 years in a row, there is still a lot of stuff you need to learn.
But learning this makes fun, believe me!
Follow the journey and get going in motorsport!
See you next time!
